Why should companies think about childcare at all?
There are a few major trends converging (overall and in Toronto, specifically) that make Family Care support for parent-employees a no-brainer:
Most obviously, from a business standpoint – is Talent.
Retention and acquisition of the most talented and driven employees is important – and becoming more and more difficult in Toronto as larger tech companies set up bases here. As companies grow — experienced people, who have been there and done that – are highly-valuable and sought after. The more senior employees are – they more likely it is that they have children. Helping them to manage home and work, providing tools to de-stressing the childcare situation as much as possible will be a serious benefit for them.

Retaining Senior Women.
This falls under the talent umbrella as well. It can be difficult to retain mid- and senior-level women – and this, too, comes at a cost. Middle-aged women retire a ton of expertise and knowledge when they opt-out of work because they can’t find something compatible with their home-life situation, not to mention companies missing out on the well-documented positive effects that retaining senior women does to profitability. Companies are now realization that if you want to retain women in your upper ranks – you need to support them at home, as well.
Supporting all parents.
There is now a lot more recognition of all the near-invisible work that goes on at home, after parents get home from work and on weekends to keep things running smoothly in families. With more dads sharing the parenting-chores – this isn’t a mom-only issue anymore. The more that you can do to make life easier for all employees – the better everyone will perform at work.
It’s the right thing to do.
